INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The advent of computer has made a tremendous remarkable contribution to
different fields and works of life ranging form financial institution
government institution education all institution was not left out. Efforts have
been made by some many computer analysts/scientist to improve the standard
of learning by providing and producing and teaching aids which they believe
will make better students in learning.
Nigeria the provision of the computer is yet to be fully utilized (Explored) by
our scientist. As my own contribution to Education or learning in Nigeria
today this project (virtual classroom) that will serves as tutor will help further
in teaching students some basis of Microsoft Access. If further researched and
implemented it will go a very long way especially in their ear of (IT)
Information Technology and the open-distance learning in Nigeria rather than
assume the complete role of a teacher it assists the students in learning faster
and conveniently by running the software.
It is a fact that the manual method of teaching that is the face-to-face
classroom can be rather boring but this software tutor teaching aids which I
believe will make better students because of the voice effect improvised in it.
This is very important for those once who might still or have difficulty in
learning/reading faster.
1.2 Objective of the Study
* To create a virtual classroom using methods that will fully engage the
student in the learning process though an interactive dynamic
environment involving the student on-line materials and an instructor.
* To use the power of the computer to actually do better than what
normally occurs in the face-2-face classroom.
* TO improve access to advanced educational experiences by allowing
students and instructors to participate in remove learning communities
using personal computers at home or at work.
* To create an atmosphere for minimization of information overload for
both the student and the instructors.
* To improve the quality and effectiveness of education by using the
computer to support a collaborative learning process. This brings
together a community of learners into a virtual classroom where they
can interact with each other.
1.3 Motivation
* To brings together a continuity of learners into a virtual classroom
where they can interact with each other which will create an
atmosphere with each other which will create an atmosphere for
minimization of information overload for both the students and the
instructors.
* To improve the quality and effectiveness of education in Nigeria by
using the computer technology to support a collaborative learning
process.
* To enable the teachers covered the wider curriculum within a period of
time frame.
* To enable teachers and learners connected to each other and vast
resources of the internet.
1.4 Methodology
Considering the software developing life cycle the following stages was
followed for the project development.
1. Feasibility study of the project:
(i) The primary research was carried out as an interview of some
of the Departmental lecturers to have proper understanding on
how day to day lecturing activities is been carried out so that a
system will be developed to ‘Mimic’ them.
(ii) The other information was gotten from paper materials e-book
internet etc that are relevant to the project topic to have in depth
understanding of the project.
2. (i) Based on the nature of the application or the project we deem it
fit to sue object oriented programming known as Microsoft visual basic
6.0 which has a graphical interface with components and tools that
allows easy development this will be the “front end of the application”.
(ii) Since the application is going to be database driven we shall
use MS Access database as the “Back end of the application”.
3. Implementation:
(i) By implementing this system is going to be deployed on server
base system since is going to be on line application and it will
be using web browser to lunch the application at every visit.
(iii) The output of this application is going to be an interface with
graphs several buttons link to different topics of interest and
voice interactive for effective communication. In other words
the interface is going to be highly users friendly.
1.5 Expected Contribution to Knowledge
1. To brings together a community of learners into a virtual classroom
where they can interact with each other which create an atmosphere
for minimization of information overload for both the student and the
instructors.
2. To improve access to advanced educational experiences by allowing
students and instructors to participate in remote learning communities
using personal computers at home or at work.
3. To improve the quality and effectiveness of education by using the
computer to support a collaborative learning process.
1.6 Limitation
The scope of the study is basically with the elements of the research under
study that are intentionally eliminated due to one factor or the other and
particularly for the need to have a focus. Thus this project research work is
aim to create virtual classroom software to support distance education.
Virtual classroom (A classroom in an electronic space) is an example of
intelligent sysmte. (ITS) is also an application of computer in education and
training that uses sthe concepts of expert system to provide an intelligent tutor
that can interact with the trainee with near natural language.
